About the Inventor of Laaibah Ruti Maker
Mr. Md. Humayun Kabir (The inventor & CEO of Laaibah Ruti Maker Factory) was born on 22 April 1973 in Bunagati village of Magura District. He has passed his childhood in various places on account of his father’s changing Govt. workplaces.
He passed his SSC exam from M. N. Pilot School that is situated in Kumarkhali of Kushtia District in 1990. Then he passed his HSC exam from Bunagati Degree College in 1992 and later he completed his graduation from Sheikh Burhanuddin University College, Dhaka in 1994. Then he got enrolled in LLB course of Dhaka City College and got admitted in MA course in English in Jagannath University College. However, he could not complete his later studies due to family problem.
From his early childhood, he had a habit of reading books extensively. He read different books of different writers and authors, going in libraries. He started doing jobs and providing services in different IT companies. Later, he provided consultancy services in different firms. In 2009, he innovated a new theme, named “1 Student: 1 Laptop” in order to provide laptops to children and adolescents through a tripartite agreement of concerned authority.
He invented Laaibah Ruti Maker at the end of 2011. The procedure of the invention was started in 1986 though it was brought into light in 2011. Humayun Kabir was reading in class 7 in Meherpur Govt. Zila School as his father was employed there. As his family used to get flour regularly from the government under ‘government ration’ scheme, Ruti was their main food in the breakfast. His mother used to make Rute for the family.
One day, his family was plunged into a discomfort in making Ruti in the breakfast as his mother was sick. At that moment, his father Abdur Razzak tried to make Ruti / Chapati, using Piri Belon, however, the size of the Ruti was twisted and uneven as he was not expert in making Ruti /tortilla. On the other hand, he took too much time in making Ruti. On the next day, while making Ruti, Humayun Kabir pressed a stool over small dough that is placed on another stool in order reduce the time in making Ruti. On that day, although Rutee was produced, the Rooti was torn out. This effort has had a tremendous mark on the child.
The same happening occurred four years ago in Humayun Kabir’s life in 2011. Now he himself felt discomfort while making Ruti (রুটি) in his household in Dhaka, as his wife was ill. At the moment, he tried to use the experience he had in making Ruti while he was in school. Anyway, the result was same. Then he went out to market. Now he collected different Electric and non electric Roti makers of different designs from renowned markets of Dhaka including New market. He, following instruction manuals, succeeded in making Ruti with the newly bought makers. However, the problem with these makers is that they are complex and dependent on power supply. These Ruti makers can only produce Ruti from raw dough. Those machines cannot produce Ruti out of boiled dough. Side by side, they cannot produce different sized Ruti, fuska, luchi etc. On top of that the taste of the produced Ruti becomes perverted.
Then Humayun Kabir started analyzing and researching about making Ruti using machines. He wanted to invent such a Ruti Maker that would be able to produce different sized Ruti in the shortest possible time and in the simplest way. At first, he took help from several wood masons. They managed to make a Ruti Maker, following the instructions of Humayun Kabir. Using that machine, Ruti making was made possible though the shape was not circular. Similarly, the machine took too much time. After that, he conducted research on the machine again. Collecting data and information from various sources, he attached a hygienic and slippery Ruti Paper that looks like polythene mostly (Which is one kind food wrapper or cling film). After attaching this paper, the whole scenario has changed. Ruti was produced this time in the same way as Humayun expected. The success brought out through this 4 year research has made him produce the machine in commercial scale.
Humayun Kabir has initiated a new small Factory in his own home district Magra District at Bunagati in 2012. The distance of the factory from Magura main town is 22 kilometers. Bus services are available from Magura to reach the factory. Communication system is developed and comparatively easy. In the factory, every day 10-15 Ruti Makers are being produced by a total of 17 employees including wood masons. Main raw material of the machine is timber/wood. Some hardware and Ruti Paper are attached as additional material.
At first, the sliced logs are seasoned for a specified period of time. Then it is smoothened and locked with hinges. Then the seasoned logs are given different designs with attaching handles. The two wood-pieces placed in upper and lower sides are main parts of this Maker. Ruti can be produced by placing dough between the two wood-pieces. The process is like placing a stool (piri) over another stool (piri). After finishing the task of designing and assembling the parts, the machine is painted and sunburned. At last, the production procedure of the machine is finished by pasting Ruti Paper with main sitting place. With a view to marketing the product, the Head Office is opened in Dhaka though the factory of Laaibah Ruti Maker is situated in Bunagati village of Magura District. Humayun Kabir himself controls the two offices.
The paper named as Ruti Paper is the most essential part of this machine. A Ruti is properly shaped with the help of this paper. No harmful effect for health is known as it is of very high quality wrapper. The inventor has found this paper after conducting a long search. The paper is directly imported from Japan. Humayun Kabir has named the machine after his eldest daughter Laaibah (লাইবা). At present, the machine is available in different places of Bangladesh, including Dhaka. Side by side, the demand for the machine has been created in USA, England, Dubai, Vietnam, Italy, Germany, Canada, Sweden etc. Many Laibah Ruti Makers have been exported to these countries and the countries have responded enthusiastically.
Humayun Kabir thinks that such a Ruti Maker is unique. The Ruti makers that are available in the market can produce Ruti out of only raw dough. On the other side, this Ruti Maker can produce Ruti out of both raw and boiled dough. In addition, 25-27 types of Ruti and food like: Fuska, luchi, Mash kolai, Flour Ruti, Garlic Ruti, Cumin Ruti, Gobi porota, Lasscha Parata, Khabuz, Tortilla, Vegetable toast can be produced by this machine. The shape of Ruti can be made circular or angular. The aforementioned facilities are not available in other Ruti makers. Moreover, the taste of the produced Ruti does not change after they are dried in fire as the machine operates in manual and natural way. However, electric Ruti makers fail to retain the taste of Ruti. Rather, electric ruti makers are costly as they depend on electric power supply. Laaiba Ruti Maker can produce 15 to 20 Rutis per minute, of 7 square inches to 9 square inches each. The smaller the size of each Ruti, the more the number of Rutis produced per minute.
Local people have positively taken Humayun Kabir’s machine. Specially, local people are happy for the fact that many people have found a means of earning livelihood through establishing the factory.
Humayun Kabir expresses his feeling saying that he has been continuing his effort from the beginning to the end on his own cost. He has left his IT profession for bringing out this machine. As he does not get sufficient loan on simple terms, he cannot launch large-scale production. If his effort was patronized by any government or private institute, he could reduce the price and make it affordable for common people. He has two daughters and a son.
